Reggie McNeal Iowa State 2005

Texas A&M quarterback Reggie McNeal sits on the bench during the closing minutes of the game against Iowa State on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005, at Kyle Field. Iowa State won 42-14.

A&M began the season at No. 17, but it took a tough early loss at Clemson, 25-24. The Aggies got off to a 5-2 start behind the rushing and throwing of quarterback Reggie McNeal. However, A&M dropped its final four games, including a 42-14 loss to lowly Iowa State at Kyle Field and a 56-17 loss to Texas Tech.

Freshman Stephen McGee took over at quarterback for the injured Reggie McNeal during the second half of the Aggies' loss to Oklahoma, thus ending the tenure of one of the state's most highly touted players. In the season finale, No. 2 Texas clinched an undefeated regular season with a 40-29 win at Kyle Field. Franchione's squad finished with a losing record and without bowl eligibility for the second time in three seasons. The team watched rival Texas win the national championship in thrilling fashion.
