Tackle Maurice Moorman was an All-American selection in 1966.

Edd Hargett was handed the reins to the struggling A&M offense after Harry Ledbetter was moved to the secondary. In the season's first game, Georgia Tech scored on six straight possessions to defeat the Aggies, 38-3. Hargett saw success in the second week as he completed 21 passes — a school record — for 229 yards. But the team fell, 21-13, to Tulane. A&M downed Texas Tech 35-14 to move to 1-2. The 35 points were the most scored by an Aggie team since 1961. The team tied LSU the following week, and the A&M defense intercepted four passes. A&M beat up TCU, 35-7, to get to 2-2-1. A&M finished the year 1-3, including a 21-14 heartbreaker to SMU in which the Mustangs overcame a 14-7 halftime deficit. The Aggies took a season-ending loss to Texas by the score of 22-14. It was the 10th consecutive win in the series for Texas. A&M finished the year 4-5-1. Hargett finished the season with 1,532 yards passing and 11 touchdowns, while running back Wendell Houseley rushed for 548 yards and three touchdowns.
