Oct. 30, 1931: Rita Crocker Clements was born. She was the wife of Gov. William Clements and worked for several political campaigns throughout her life at the state and national levels. While first lady of Texas, Rita Clements was noted for her historical preservation and restoration of the Texas Governor’s Mansion and the Texas Capitol Building.
A coed dorm on the north side of campus was constructed and named for Clements in 1981. Her personal papers, as well as her husband's, are held by the Cushing Memorial Library and Archives as part of the Archive of Modern Politics Collection.
