Dec. 13, 1972: A rendition of The Aggie War Hymn was played in space to wake up astronauts on the Apollo 17 mission. Gerry Griffin, class of 1956, was the flight director in mission control for the last manned mission to the moon.
Apollo 17 left Earth on Dec. 7, 1972, and returned Dec. 19. Griffin previously served as a flight director for Apollo missions 12 and 15. During Apollo 13, "he led one of the teams of flight controllers who were responsible for the safe return of the astronauts," according to his NASA biography. Griffin was director of the Johnson Space Center from 1982 to 1986.
